Michael Brotherton

Senior Associate, Education

Michael specialises in education law and dispute resolution.  His education law expertise covers a whole range of issues from both the individual and the institutional perspective in both the maintained and independent sector.  He has particular expertise in Admissions, Exclusions, Special Educational Needs, Disability Discrimination and he also regularly advises on general school governance issues.  He has advised Admission Appeal Panels on judicial review challenges to their decisions and has initiated judicial review proceedings against the Office of the Schools Adjudicator on behalf of schools.

Michael has dealt with some high profile cases including X v Y School [2007] (the right to wear the niqab (veil) at school); E v The Governing Body of JFS [2008] (race discrimination in school admission policy).

Michael writes regularly on education law issues, editing the firm’s Education Law Bulletin, and delivers talks and training on exclusions.

Michael is based in our Bath office.
