Dealing with Regulators
We regard it as essential to our work to establish and maintain good working relationships with the Charity Commission, its lawyers and executive staff, although there may be times when we need to put our client’s views forward firmly.
We have achieved a good working relationship with the Commission and other elements of Government through:
-
the maintenance of regular contact with the Commission;
-
a useful insight into the workings of the Commission from three former Charity Commission employees who now work for us, Robert Meakin, Vicki Bowles and Peter Garrard;
-
regular participation within the working parties and the Executive Committee of the Charity Law Association – three of our partners, Michael King, Jonathan Burchfield and Ann Phillips have held office Chairman or Deputy Chairman of the CLA;
-
being members of the Commission’s Interim Managers panel – Michael King has held 4 appointments as Interim Manager of charities under inquiry;
-
involvement with consultation processes, prior to legislation and issue of policy guidance
We do of course need to deal with many other regulators and are well used to dealing with bodies such as:
- Companies House
- The new Community Interest Company regulator
- HM Revenue & Customs
- The Care Quality Commission
- Charity Trusteeship – Avoidable Pitfalls for Local Authorities - 25th March 2010
- Catholic Care v Charity Commission - 17th March 2010
