Academy Conversion

Stone King is independently recognised as being one of the top practices in the country for our work in the education and charity sectors.  We have built up an excellent reputation advising on a significant number of academy projects, with members of our team being involved right from the initial launch of the academy programme.  We have supported over 400 schools nationally who have converted to academy status under the Academies Act 2010, and our clients range from large academy chains to small individual academies.  We also have extensive experience of free schools, having advised over 45 of the free schools who have opened or been approved since the policy was introduced, including the first free school which opened in September 2011.

Our team comprises experts in charity, education, property, employment and commercial law, offering school leadership, sponsors, proposer groups and project managers the support they need in all aspects of an academy or free school’s set-up.

Our experience and in-depth knowledge of the education sector ensures that our advice during the course of the project is given with a clear understanding of what the academy or free school will need to operate effectively as a school in the future. We aim to work as an integrated part of your team. We spend time in the early stages learning about the key drivers and priorities for the project, and then work hard to ensure that we are able to provide the legal structure required to deliver this vision.

Once an academy or free school is established, it has particular operational requirements.  We act for a large number of existing academies and free schools, providing a full range of support services.

For more information about converting to or sponsoring an academy, or opening a free school, please contact either Graham Burns or Roger Inman on a no-obligation basis.
