The conflict in Ukraine has led some schools to consider terminating their contracts with Gazprom, according to Schools Week.

Lawyer Graham Burns was able to explain the legal position saying:

“The statutory provisions which specifically relate to local authorities in respect of non-commercial considerations do not apply to academy trusts.

“If any academy trust wished to terminate their contract with Gazprom they would need to consider carefully the terms of their contract and any breakage costs which would apply.

“As things currently stand the current events in Ukraine would not be a lawful reason to terminate contracts, and any termination would need to be in accordance with the terms.”

Abridged versions of Graham’s explanation were published by both Schools Week and its sister publication FE Week.
