National law firm Stone King is delighted to announce that Julian Blake, formerly joint head of Charity and Social Enterprises at Bates Wells Braithwaite, has joined the firm as a partner to add further depth to its Social Enterprise and Social Finance services and drive this area of work.

With extensive experience across charitable, commercial and educational matters, Julian has been described in legal directory Chambers UK as "possibly the most able, certainly the most committed and one of the best charity solicitors in the UK today" and clients testify that he is "brilliant at bridging the vital charity and commercial interface".

Steven Greenwood, Managing Partner at Stone King, says: “Julian is a highly respected and prominent force in the charity sector and beyond, we are proud to welcome him and he is an exceptional addition to our Charity and Social Enterprise Group.”

Julian has particular expertise in applying commercial disciplines to public benefit organisations, establishing and working with social purpose clients, and has been closely involved in pioneering areas including social investment and social value and the engagement between social enterprises and the public sector. Since 2012 he has supported a Social Business International initiative, E3M, a group of pioneering chief executives that run social enterprises across a range of public service markets, an initiative that Stone King will work in partnership with going forward.

Tim Rutherford, Head of Stone King’s Charity & Social Enterprise Sector Group, says: “Julian’s experience and innovative approach will allow us to further expand our Social Enterprise and Social Finance service offering and support our clients with the challenges they face in this important and growing market.”

Julian adds: “Stone King is a leading law firm in the public benefit sector and I look forward to bringing my experience and knowledge, particularly in relation to mature social enterprise, to the C&SE Group most especially in public service innovation. I strongly believe in the transformative potential of social enterprises and social finance on organisations, communities and the environment and in the need for this pioneering market to collaborate closely with the public sector. I am particularly engaged in supporting excellence in social enterprise and promoting initiatives to receive more mainstream recognition, to the benefit of all.”

Stone King’s work with charities and social enterprises is at the heart of the 200-year-old practice. The firm has one of the largest teams of charity and social enterprise lawyers in the country with more than 50 specialists spread across our regional office network. The team is known for its proactive, collaborative relationship with the Charity Commission and acts for more than 200 of the country’s largest charities, including many household names.
