Final report of the safeguarding taskforce published

Date updated:

The Charity Commission has published its Final Report of the safeguarding taskforce. The internal taskforce was established by the Commission following the safeguarding revelations involving Oxfam and other charities earlier in the year.

In summary, the taskforce found that:

  • charities do not always provide enough evidence to prove that they have learnt from incidents in order to prevent similar problems in the future
  • serious incident reports are not always made quick enough
  • charities continue to under-report serious incidents

The Commission has acknowledged the need to ‘work with charities to address systematic underreporting of serious incidents by charities’. Despite the ongoing concern in relation to underreporting, the Commission did report a significant increase in the number of safeguarding reports received, with three times as many reports received in February and March 2018 in comparison to the same period in the previous year.
