Welcome to Charity Essentials. This month we report on Stone King's recent success in the Upper Charity Tribunal representing a Cambridge Charity in bid to retain its name. We also look at the Charity Commission’s new Statement of Strategic Intent and have a round up of recent news items that may be of interest.

Stone King success in Upper Charity Tribunal

Stone King has successfully represented a Cambridge charity in its bid to retain its name.

Our client, the Cambridge Islamic College, was required by the Charity Commission to change its name as it was felt to be too similar to that of the Cambridge Muslim College.

Charity Commission publishes new Statement of Strategic Intent

On 4 October 2018, the Charity Commission published its new Statement of Strategic Intent, setting out the regulator’s purpose and objectives for the five years to 2023.

On the same day, the Chair of the Charity Commission, Baroness Stowell, gave a speech at the RSA titled ‘The Future of Charity’ to accompany the Statement. The new objectives indicate the Commission’s ambition to ‘shape the agenda’ in public debate about charity, although commentators and the Commission itself note the limited capacity it has to do so.

Post Brexit plans for EU Nationals – The Application Process

Further to our article on The Post Brexit plans for EU Nationals, we now explore the details of the application process of the EU settled scheme proposed by the government following the UK’s departure from the EU. This transitional scheme will run from 29 March 2019 until 31 December 2020. There will be two types of status:

Final report of the safeguarding taskforce published

The Charity Commission has published its Final Report of the safeguarding taskforce. The internal taskforce was established by the Commission following the safeguarding revelations involving Oxfam and other charities earlier in the year.
