It is always best practice for schools to monitor their post during school closure periods, particularly over the longer summer closure period. Monitoring the post will help to ensure that notices of employment tribunal claims against the school are picked up in advance of the response date. It is the school’s responsibility to ensure that the tribunal office receives its response within  28 days of receiving the claim form.

In certain circumstances, it may be possible to apply for an extension of the prescribed time limit, however, monitoring the post can help to avoid the need to apply for an extension. An extension may not always be granted as employment tribunals do not take into consideration the school closure period during the summer.
