Caroline Fell
Partner, Head of Family and Mediation Team
Caroline is a partner in the family team and advises on all issues arising on the breakdown of relationships. Caroline is described as a Notable Practitioner in Chambers and Partners UK Guide 2022, being noted as “down-to-earth, results-focused and empathetic", "Caroline Fell is bright, measured and calm - she is a great person to work with”. She is also noted as a Key Lawyer in the Legal 500 UK 2022.
Caroline recognises that, with the right guidance, it is eminently preferable for a couple to resolve issues following separation together where possible. She looks to assist clients in achieving this end through a variety of processes, to include mediation, collaboration and constructive negotiation. Caroline has an expanding mediation practice, using her extensive experience and expertise to assist couples in resolving issues arising on separation, particularly where complex financial issues are involved. Caroline is also qualified to speak with children as a child inclusive mediator. She is ranked in Chambers for her ADR work.
Caroline regularly advises clients where international issues are involved, being able to advise on issues as to jurisdiction, cases involving overseas assets and financial claims following an overseas divorce. Caroline is further able to assist in the preparation of pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, both in relation to national and cross-border marriages.
Caroline specialises in financial matters on divorce and separation, often where complex issues are involved. This includes considering family businesses, property portfolios and cases involving significant pension provision (public sector, private, SIPPS and pensions that exceed the Lifetime Allowance (LTA)).
Caroline has a particular interest in separation and divorce involving international issues. Expert advice may be required when considering whether proceedings for divorce should be issued in England and Wales, or whether they should be issued in another jurisdiction. She is able to advise where clients are based in England but have assets overseas, or where clients are based abroad.
In recent years Caroline has done a number of divorces for those in later life, taking into account retirement planning within the divorce context.
Caroline can assist in the preparation or consideration of prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, enabling parties to achieve autonomy and certainty as far as possible when considering marriage.
Whilst Caroline is based in our central Bath office she regularly acts for clients not just in the south west but all over England, Wales and internationally. Caroline is able to see clients both in person and via video call.
Caroline trained at Manches Solicitors (now Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP), qualifying in 2002 and joining Stone King in 2005, becoming Partner in 2018.
Caroline is vice-chair of Bath Resolution and works as a trustee for various local charitable organisations.
Caroline has a strong academic background, having been awarded the Colin Beattie prize for the highest performance in her Post-Graduate Diploma in law, and having achieved Distinction on both this and the LPC

‘Caroline Fell is a stand-out partner. She is a calm, capable and knowledgeable lawyer who has a wonderful manner with clients. I recommend her both as a solicitor and as a mediator. She is technical and also pragmatic. Rebecca Eels is a stand-out partner who I recommend particularly for child inclusive mediation work. She is brilliant with clients.’
‘No praise is too high for Caroline Fell. She is extremely efficient, reassuringly knowledgeable in all her advice, and very on the ball. Everything has been done remarkably quickly and she has been good at chasing the solicitor on the other side as well. I have been most fortunate in having her act for me and she has caused me to transfer all my affairs to Stone King.’
