Caroline Fell
Partner, Head of Family and Mediation

Caroline is a Partner and Head of the Family team. She advises on all issues arising from the breakdown of relationships. Caroline is ranked in Band 1 of the Chambers and Partners UK Guide 2025 and as a Key Lawyer in Legal 500 UK 2025, being noted as “a truly kind and professional individual”, “always looking for solutions” and “having the ability to strike the right balance in all situations”.

Caroline recognises that, with the right guidance, it is eminently preferable for a couple to resolve issues following separation together where possible. She looks to assist clients in achieving this end through a variety of processes, to include mediation, collaboration, and constructive negotiation. Caroline is ranked in Chambers for her ADR work and has an established mediation practice, using her extensive experience and expertise to assist couples in resolving issues arising on separation, particularly where complex financial issues are involved. Caroline is also qualified to speak with children as a child-inclusive mediator.

Caroline regularly advises clients where international issues are involved, being able to advise on issues as to jurisdiction, cases involving overseas assets and financial claims following an overseas divorce. Caroline is further able to assist in the preparation of pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, both in relation to national and cross-border marriages.

Caroline has over 20 years’ experience in advising clients on family issues. Her work focuses in particular on the following:

  • Financial matters on divorce and separation, often where complex issues are involved to include family businesses, property portfolios and cases involving significant pension provision (public sector pensions and private pensions, whether defined benefit or defined contribution).
  • Separation and divorce involving international issues. This includes advice on forum ie whether proceedings for divorce should be issued in England and Wales, or whether they should be issued in another jurisdiction.  She is able to advise where clients are based in England but have assets overseas, or where  clients are based abroad.
  • Divorces for those in later life, taking into account retirement planning within the divorce context (sometimes known as ‘silver divorces’).
  • Pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, enabling parties to achieve autonomy and certainty as far as possible when considering marriage.
  • Mediation, whether in relation to financial matters and/or children issues. Caroline is qualified as a child-inclusive mediator and is able to speak with children as part of the mediation process.

Caroline trained at Manches Solicitors (now Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP), qualifying in 2002 and joining Stone King in 2005, becoming Partner in 2018.

Caroline is the Vice-chair of Bath Resolution and works as a Trustee for various local charitable organisations.

What our clients say

"Throughout the time it took to resolve all matters pertaining to my divorce, the team at Stone King were responsive, provided appropriate advice delivered in a way I could easily understand and dealt with the opposing party sensibly and diplomatically to resolve all matters. This was not a simple case, but their expertise and professionalism helped me get through a very difficult time in my life with minimum drama. I am so grateful to the now retired Tracey Smith, but also to Chloe Taylor and Caroline Fell who took over seamlessly and negotiated a very satisfactory ending to this matter. Thank you."
