Stone King, a leading education and charities law firm, partnered with the University of Sunderland to explore the impact of governance reviews in further education colleges across England.

Governance reviews - also known as External Reviews of Governance (ERGs) - are independent evaluations of a college’s governing body, offering expert insights to improve board performance and stakeholder confidence.

Over 18 months, researchers interviewed college leaders and analysed reports from institutions reviewed by Stone King. The study examined how governance reviews drive change, the roles of key individuals, and how insights are enacted within governance frameworks.

Led by Professor Gary Husband and Visiting Professor Ron Hill, the research revealed that strong relationships between reviewers and governance professionals often led to improved board practices, better strategic focus, and enhanced risk management.

Professor Husband said: “We saw positive impacts and gained a deeper understanding of the people and processes involved. Governance isn’t just about assurance - it’s about strategy and innovation.”

Tom Morrison, Partner and Head of Further Education at Stone King, added: “This research provides the sector with evidence-based insights and highlights the vital role of Governance Professionals. We’re proud to support this work and look forward to further collaboration.”

Findings will be shared with participating colleges and key sector bodies including the AoC, ETF, DfE, and DWP. The report was officially launched at the University of Sunderland’s ‘Educational Governance in Practice’ conference, with a keynote by Vice Chancellor Sir David Bell.
