The Court of Appeal held that a policy of restricting the provision of social housing to a certain religious community only was justified as a form of positive action, as it was a proportionate means of achieving the legitimate aim of the charity.

Faith based organisations often look to sponsor religious workers from outside the EEA to enhance their experiences within the organisation. Whilst the term ‘worker’ is prescribed by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) which is part of the Home Office, many organisations rely upon this route to bring sisters, priests and other religious members of a congregation to the UK.

Big hearts at inaugural Bike Day

Cyclists braved the rain and headwind at Bath’s Odd Down Circuit for a fundraising festival of cycling, supported by national law firm Stone King. Cyclists sped round the track for time trials in the morning and circuit races in the afternoon, whilst younger riders had the chance to do laps around the 1.5km track during a family fun session. An exciting knock-out race ‘Devil take the Hindmost’ concluded the day’s races.

New guidance on campaigning in the lead up to elections and referendums

The Electoral Commission has published new guidance for charities about campaigning in the lead up to elections and referendums. Following the general election in 2017 – which, because it was a snap election, caused additional complexity – non-party campaigners called for greater clarity on how the regulated period and other rules worked, so that they could campaign with confidence throughout the year. The Commission has worked closely with charities to produce a new guidance resource.
