Stone King's Cambridge office was thrilled to be part of this year's Dragon Boat Festival on the River Cam at Fen Ditton.
Competing under the name ‘All Oar Nothing’, the team comprising 11 rowers and one drummer joined 40 other teams in paddling with a purpose to support Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust.
The event organisers declared this year’s Festival to be a massive success with over 600 competitors raising £35,000 for the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital (CCRH) bringing technological advances from lab bench to patient bedside as rapidly as possible.
The combination of good weather, dragon boat races, family-friendly entertainment including lion dances from the Cambridge Chinese Community meant there was a fantastic turnout, with participants, family, friends, and sponsors all enjoying a great day out all for a fantastic cause.
‘All Oar Nothing’ competed in three rounds and placed a thoroughly respectable 25th out of 41 teams overall. The team was buoyed by a few members who had previous experience of this event; with one member having lived in the home of the Dragon Boat Race, Hong Kong, sharing his experience and top tips with everyone. Recording a best time of 65.35 seconds, it was an admirable effort by the Stone King team considering the winning time posted by the Festival Champions, Paddle Shifters, was 62.95 seconds.
The team ended the day in a very positive mood having thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the camaraderie.
Dagan Finkenrath, Legal Administrator at Stone King, who captained Team ‘All Oar Nothing’ said “Thank you to everyone who attended the event and participated in Team ‘All Oar Nothing’. We are delighted to have doubled our fundraising goal and to be able to add more than £500 to the grand total raised on the day for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust.
“Everybody gave it our all out there and we did well against some very strong and well-trained teams. Thankfully, none of us went for a swim, unlike our competitors in the first race.
“Special thanks to Chris Jones for providing the team gazebo, Ollie Daw and Philip Askew for travelling from London to join the team, Ben Lucas for sharing his wisdom and techniques from previous Dragon Boating experience and Duncan Ho for bringing his family along to compete as well as to cheer us on.
Bring on next year, where we will make it through to the semi-finals, with a sub 60 time.”
