On 29 July 2024, the Education Secretary accepted the recommendations of the School Teachers’ Review Body of a 5.5% pay award. The Education Secretary has said that the pay award will be fully funded, with schools receiving an additional £1.1 billion of additional funding.
There is now a formal consultation process to be followed and we expect to see the final version of the 2024 School Teacher’s Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD) published in October. Pay awards will be backdated to 1 September and schools are advised not to implement the increase until the STPCD has been published.
The DfE have published a guidance document called Managing Teachers’ and Leaders’ Pay, which appears to replace Implementing your School’s Approach to Pay. It states that the requirement for performance related pay will end with pay decisions that are made in the autumn 2024 and schools are free to remove performance related pay from their pay policy for the 24/25 academic year. However, schools do need to clearly set out how pay decisions will be made.
In the DfE blog post there is mention of allowing teachers to carry out their PPA time at home to improve flexibility for teachers, so that is something schools will need to consider when timetabling.
