Date updated: Wednesday 31st January 2024

From 31 January 2024, the Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) is being expanded to nationals of:

  • Uruguay: Uruguay nationals will be able to apply to the Youth Mobility Scheme with an allocation of 500 available spaces.

  • Japan: Japanese nationals now have an increased allocation of 6,000 spaces. The requirement to obtain an invitation to apply is being removed to allow a more streamlined YMS visa process.

  • Republic of Korea: Korean nationals now have an increased allocation of 5,000 spaces. The age range for applicants is also being expanded from 18-30 to 18-35.  The requirement to obtain an invitation to apply is being removed to allow a more streamlined YMS visa process.

The changes build on earlier announced changes for:

  • Australia, Canada, New Zealand: These countries now benefit from a three-year, rather than two-year, visa. The age range for applicants is 18-35.

Who is the Youth Mobility Scheme for?

The YMS visa is for young people who wish to experience life and work in the United Kingdom for a period of up to two years or three years. Eligibility and number of places are based on reciprocal bilateral arrangements made between the UK Government and individual countries worldwide.

Can this replace employer sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route?

The YMS is a temporary visa which allows work in the UK for any employer but does not lead to settlement in the UK. It can provide a temporary workforce for UK employers, but longer-term sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route will be dependant on meeting new salary rules in place from April 2024.

What should employers do?

Employers should anticipate an increased number of applicants using these visas and ensure recruitment and HR are aware of visa options and conditions for overseas applicants.

Please contact the Immigration Team for any training support on right-to-work compliance and work visa options in the UK.
