Date updated: Tuesday 19th March 2024

As of March 2024, the STPCD has been updated and now includes an annex setting out a list of administrative tasks that a teacher should not ordinarily be asked to perform.  The list is on page 85, with the annex also containing three questions to consider before determining if the task can be carried out by a teacher.

The updated document can get be read here and the list of tasks that teachers should not be asked to perform includes:

  • Investigating pupil absence

  • Administration relating to school visits, trips and residentials.

  • Organisation, decoration and assembly of the physical classroom space e.g. moving classrooms, moving classroom furniture, putting up and taking down classroom displays.

  • Ordering supplies and equipment.

  • Administration of medical consent forms and administering of medication on a routine or day-to-day basis.

  • Taking, copying, distributing or typing up notes (e.g. verbatim notes) or producing formal minutes.

  • Keeping and filing paper or electronic records and data e.g. in school management systems or physical office files.

In some cases, the STPCD forms part of a teacher’s contract so it will be very important to carefully consider the full list to ensure that you are not expecting or directing a teacher to perform the tasks on the list.

Background

As you may be aware, in July 2023 alongside the pay award, the government launched the Workload Reduction Taskforce, as part of a commitment to reducing teacher and leader workload.  The taskforce then produced the STPCD.
