Stone King, Buzzacott and E3M will be discussing some of the biggest public contracting challenges while offering insights and best practice in how they can be overcome.

The ‘Public contracting for charities and social enterprises’ event takes place on Tuesday 3 October from 3-5pm and will be in two parts. The first session will cover theoretical aspects and practical advice, and this will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A session.

Stone King Partner Julian Blake will deliver an informative session looking at Defining and Interpreting Contracts: Relationships, Technicalities, Accountability. Julian will explore the legalities and practicalities of public contracts and look at the repercussions of the power imbalance between contracting parties, as well as how this affects the contract as a relationship, financial agreement, and tool for accountability.

Buzzacott’s Edward Finch will provide an overview of some of the shortcomings in public procurement processes and how this blocks charities and social enterprises from achieving sustainable revenue when working with public bodies.

Socrates Socratous from Buzzacott will explore the financial implications of the difference in approaches to contracts and what that means for cashflow and reporting.

E3M’s Jonathan Bland will present a session entitled Vitalising Purpose: The Power of the Social Enterprise Difference in Public Services, looking at aspirations for the power balance between social enterprises and public bodies to create functional and sustainable relationships through public procurement.

There will also be a networking session to conclude, allowing attendees to make connections and share ideas.

The event offers essential insights for charities and social enterprises seeking guidance on negotiating public procurement processes, and is particularly pertinent to those currently grappling with, and involved in, the negotiation of public sector contracts who would like some support on how to manage things differently.

The event operates under Chatham House rules, fostering open sharing of experiences and peer support, and will conclude with a networking session for attendees to connect and share ideas.

The event will take place at Buzzacott LLP, 130 Wood Street, London, EC2V 6DL; sign-up details here.
