Following the news that the NEU will take industrial action, please see below the link to the briefing note that we have produced on industrial action for teachers:

Industrial Action by teachers – Briefing Note

The Department for Education has also produced updated guidance on handling strike action in schools, which can be found here:

Handling strike action in schools

Within the DfE guidance schools are being asked to prioritise attendance for certain groups including vulnerable children and young people and children of critical workers. In addition, the guidance also states that schools should consider prioritising pupils due to take public examinations and other formal assessments.

There is still the option for strikes not to occur if an improved pay deal for teachers could be agreed but this seems unlikely and provisional dates for strike action by the NEU are below:

  • 1 February – national strike action across England and Wales
  • 14 February – national strike action across Wales
  • 28 February – regional strike action in the North, Northwest and Yorkshire and the Humber
  • 1 March – regional strike action in the West Midlands, the East Midlands and the east
  • 2 March – regional strike action in the South West, South East and London

In addition to the above, both the NAHT and NASUWT have confirmed they are considering re-balloting members in state schools as the vote for industrial action took place during a postal strike.
