After the government’s target recruitment of trainee teachers in secondary schools was missed by 50% last year, it appears that the DfE is considering ways to support schools with hiring teachers from overseas.

Despite the recent plans announced to reduce net migration, it is clear that overseas recruitment of teachers continues to be necessary to fill essential teaching roles and solutions to this deepening recruitment crisis are to be welcomed.

State schools should also be reassured that Skilled Worker salary levels for teaching roles will continue to follow national pay scales and that sponsorship remains an option.

However, LSAs and TSAs do not fall within this exemption. The current barriers to sponsorship, including the costs of sponsoring under the Skilled Worker route and sourcing subject specialists, also means that many within the education sector will continue to struggle to recruit from overseas.

If your school is currently considering sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route, we have prepared the following guidance which may be of assistance here.
