Tes has interviewed Stone King’s Jean Boyle for an article examining teachers’ entitlement to pay if they have to isolate as a result of Covid-19.
The education publication’s article ‘Will teacher-parents be paid if forced to stay home?’, looks at what may become an issue for schools as a result of the pandemic.
Jean, a Partner in the Employment Team who specialises in the education and not-for-profit sectors, told Tes that many schools are exploring home-working possibilities, with some teachers who have to stay home being deployed to develop remote education provision in light of the new government law.
Where staff can’t work from home, Jean explained that schools are taking differing approaches, with some paying while others are not.
Jean said: “Some schools are taking a more robust approach. These schools are saying: we can’t afford to pay staff for time they are off work and not able to work.
"Therefore they are exploring unpaid leave as an option. This is within the law as we see it.”
