Tom Vasov
Solicitor

Tom is a solicitor in our Information Law team, specialising in data protection, electronic marketing, cookies and tracking technologies, freedom of information & environmental information, AI, misuse of private information, and breaches of confidence. 

Tom advises charities and social enterprises, companies and public authorities on a broad range of information law issues, including complex information requests, disclosures of personal data to public bodies and law enforcement agencies, ed tech, monitoring, surveillance, marketing, cookies, cross-border data transfers, and data protection issues arising in incorporations and restructuring.

Before his transition to private practice, Tom held senior in-house data protection roles in the charity sector, including at The Brilliant Club and Good Things Foundation. 
 

Tom has an extensive academic background, including:

  • LLB with Honours;

  • Diploma in Professional Legal Practice (PEAT 1);

  • top quintile results in both SQE1 and SQE2;

  • CIPP/E; and

  • co-authored a report for Lawyers Without Borders.

Outside work, Tom enjoys hiking, climbing, running and travelling. He is trilingual and speaks English, Bulgarian and French.

Tom has a wide array of case studies, including:

  • Led ICO engagement following a cyber incident affecting a £50m turnover body, helping to avoid enforcement despite national media attention.
  • Led information law remediation work at a £100m turnover education institution
  • Advised on a highly contentious subject access request involving national media interest and regulatory scrutiny which resulted in a favourable ICO outcome
  • Provided bespoke training to a £230m turnover organisation on responding to information requests by law enforcement agencies.
  • Advised a UK national charity on negotiating the successful continuous provision of mission-critical data-backed services after termination of the underlying funding agreement with a Government department.
  • Implemented an AI and information law transformation project at a nature conservation organisation tacking the climate crisis and biodiversity collapse.
  • Advised a Diocese serving over 30,000 worshippers across 166 parishes on complex information law requests, involving matters of ecclesiastical law, clergy blacklists, and blue files.
  • Advised a UK professional body on an information request involving matters of identity theft and suspected fraud.
