The French Property Exhibition took place on January 27 and 28 and was a key event for anyone considering buying a property in France.

Our specialist international team was on hand to answer questions and give advice at Stand 19, Including on French conveyancing, French Wills and estate planning and French probate and estate administration.

Members of the international and cross-border team were also available throughout the show to discuss issues connected to buying property in France.

“Many people with second homes in France aren’t aware that, under French law their property may not pass to who they want under the terms of their Wills when they die,” said Senior Associate Solicitor Charlotte Macdonald.

“Some people believe that it’s possible to choose English law in their Wills by using the European Succession Regulation, but it is not always that straightforward. In fact, a change to French law may mean that French forced heirship will apply so we would be happy to explain what that would mean for you.

“There are often questions when loved ones die in France and we’ll be happy to explain and guide people through the process including the administration, tax and the practicalities involved in obtaining French probate and transferring assets into the names of the beneficiaries.

“We know that this can be a difficult period but we can help and support.”

Charlotte Macdonald, in addition to French paralegal Jacques Cutting presented an informative sessions on both days of the event entitled De-Mystifying the French Conveyancing Process’ ‘How European laws can affect who inherits your French property and how you can ensure your final wishes are met.’
